Weekly Home Favourite: University of Oxford Botanic Gardens

If you are staying in one of our short let apartments or holiday cottages and looking for something to do in Oxford, one of our favourites is the University of Oxfords Botanic Gardens. The gardens are very close to a lot of our central Oxford properties and the perfect place to spend an afternoon.

Oxford's Botanic Gardens are the oldest Botantic gardens in Great Britain and one of the oldest scientific gardens in the world. The garden was founded in 1621 as a physic garden growing plants for medicinal research.

The location of the gardens right in the centre of Oxford next to the Cherwell river is exquisite. When you enter it feels like entering a different world. A place of peace and tranquility right in the centre of Oxford.

The highlights of the gardens are the seven glasshouses. The glasshouses display a wonderful range of plants from a range of climatic regions. Visitors to the glasshouses will travel through jungles, swamps and alpine regions but not move from the centre of Oxford.

On Saturday the Botanic Gardens is holding a family picnic to celebrate the start of national insect week. Hear live music, learn to drum and get creative with family art activities. The activities are included in the entrance fee of £4 for adults, £3 for concessions, children and Oxford University students get in free.
